Going into today’s fixture we felt it could be an easier game, but the lads didn’t take anything for granted, starting with a strong lineup and the right mindset.
Old Wulfs got off to the perfect start, taking the lead within the first two minutes. From there, the pressure on Essington was relentless. Old Wulfs pressed high and dominated all areas of the pitch, moving the ball quickly and with confidence. By the 25-minute mark the score had raced to 9–0, and the boys continued their strong performance to finish the first half 12–0 up.
Half-time
Phil spoke to the lads about maintaining our shape, continuing to play proper football, and being more aware of staying onside, after having three goals ruled out for offside in the first half.
Second half
Kyle went into goal, with Olly moving into midfield. Straight from the kick-off, Olly made an immediate impact by getting on the scoresheet. From that point on, it was complete Old Wulfs domination, with goals coming from all over the pitch. The highlight was Oscar, our centre-back, grabbing his first goal of the season, well deserved.
The game finished with a convincing 24–0 win.
Full credit to Essington DSA U15 Eagles, who never gave up and showed great character throughout. A really nice group of lads, and it was great to see both teams having a laugh together at the end of the game, exactly what grassroots football is all about.
